Translatoins to the native language

Translation is a very complex, precarious and delicate art. It’s so difficult to do a good job translating to your mother language, almost impossible to achieve a good result translating to a foreign one. Even if you have devoted much of your life to studying the other language at school, abroad and feel comfortable speaking it, it is certainly not wise and unprofessional to accept a contract or a job that involves a translation to a foreign language, nor will it make your resume perfect. Different is the case of the perfect bilinguals, who grew up speaking two languages at the same level: it is the only case where it is acceptable to translate to two different languages. If we learn a foreign language as we are adults, at school, at university or in the country, we will never be able to grasp all the nuances that a native speaker instinctively knows. We can, perhaps, know how to recognize them in a speech, but another thing is to have to reproduce them by creating them from scratch, or rather, from a text in another language. Certain expressions can come to mind spontaneously only to those who speak a given language from childhood.

Although our linguistic sensitivity is strong, we will never be able to do a good job like that of a native speaker and the text will be grammatically correct, but “artificial”, not too smooth. Of course, if a friend asks you to translate an e-mail or a text which will not be published there is no reason to refuse, but if you want to be a professional, it is necessary and essential to translate always and only towards their mother language, especially when we talk about literature: it means respect towards ourselves and the author, who deserves to see their work treated in a professional manner.

Publishers are fully aware of these aspects of the professional figure of the translator. A publisher, therefore, who offers a job and / or a translation project to a foreign language and not to the native language, probably shows his little trust in professionalism to the translator and the author of the project that needs to be translated.
